Kargil Vijay Diwas :The country is paying homage to its soldiers on Kargil Vijay Diwas, 26th July. In the Kargil war of 1999, Indian brave soldiers liberated the high peaks of Kargil from Pakistan’s occupation. Even the brave souls of Lucknow sacrificed their lives in this war, and the people of the state are paying their heartfelt tribute to them.

The nation is observing the 24th anniversary of the Kargil war as Vijay Diwas on 26th July. After the defeat in the 1971 war, Pakistan launched a covert war in Kargil in 1999, where Indian soldiers taught them a befitting lesson.
During the Kargil war, many bravehearts from Lucknow took their stand. The courage of individuals like Captain Manoj Pandey, Rifleman Sunil Jang, Lance Naik Kevlanaand Dwivedi, Captain Aditya Mishra, and Major Ritesh Sharma demolished the evil designs of the enemies. While defending the motherland, these warriors sacrificed their lives and unfurled the flag of victory.

The memories of these heroes of the Kargil war are cherished in many places. The description of their valor and the epic of their bravery is kindling the spirit of patriotism in the hearts of the people at the Kargil Vatika in front of the Martyrs’ Memorial. On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, a program will be organized here. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will pay his respects to the martyrs. The martyrs will also be offered floral tributes at the War Memorial, Smaarak Smitika, by the Central Command Headquarters.
Rifleman Sunil Jang had promised to return with a long holiday

Sunil Jang, residing in the Topkhana Bazaar of the Cantonment, was recruited into the 11 Gorkha Rifles without informing his family at the age of 16. His father, Nar Narayan Jang, also retired from the army. As per his relatives, Sunil had come home a few days before the Kargil war. Suddenly, he received a call from his unit. While leaving, Sunil had said, ‘Mother, next time, I will come home with a long holiday.’
After returning home, Rifleman Sunil Jang reached the Car Nicobar in Ladakh Scouts on May 10, 1999. He held his position against the enemies for three days. On May 15, he got hit by bullets in a shootout. He didn’t let go of his gun until his last breath.
Lance Naik Kevlanaand Dwivedi arrived during the vacation amidst the battle
Lance Naik Kevlanaand Dwivedi’s wife, Kamala Dwivedi, was unwell. He came home on March 26, 1999, to see his wife. During this time, he received a message to report to his unit immediately to take the post at Kargil from the enemy. Lance Naik Kevlanaand Dwivedi reached Jammu and joined the 15 Kumaon Regiment.
After reaching Kargil, he unfurled the tricolor at Point 4875 with his unit. On the night of 6th and 7th July, he got injured while capturing the Muskoh Valley. Following the Commanding Officer’s orders, he handed over his command to Captain Anuj Nair before returning to the base.
His 15 Kumaon Regiment liberated the Muskoh Valley from the enemy, and the unit was honored with the title of Muskoh Saviour. After recovering from his injuries, he was martyred during an encounter with terrorists on 25th September 1999 in Kupwara. On June 2023, a part of Andaman and Nicobar has been named after the braveheart, Lance Naik Kevlanaand Dwivedi. The soldier school of Lucknow is also named after him. He was selected in the National Defense Academy after studying in this school.
Captain Manoj Pandey waved the tricolor with a hand grenade attack at Khalubar post

Capturing the strategically vital Khalubar post in the Kargil war was a significant challenge for the Indian Army. It was the post that could have been the biggest obstacle for advancing troops. 24-year-old officer Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey of Alpha Company was entrusted with this responsibility. Captain Manoj advanced with his company and bravely attacked Khalubar post. While destroying three bunkers, he reached the fourth bunker, but he got shot. Even while injured, this brave soldier attacked Khalubar post with a hand grenade and achieved victory.
For this valor, Captain Manoj Kumar Pandey was honored with the Param Vir Chakra (posthumously) for his supreme sacrifice for the motherland. A part of Andaman and Nicobar was named after him in June 2023. He is also known as a soldier school of Lucknow. He got selected in the National Defense Academy after studying in this school.
Captain Aditya Mishra established contact by laying the wire

Captain Aditya Mishra’s father, Lt. General GS Mishra, was posted in various places. Hence, after studying in various cities of the country, Captain Aditya Mishra joined the Indian Army as a Second Lieutenant on 8th June 1996. After completing training at Army Training College Mahu, he joined his unit, 15 Jat Regiment, in Batalk Sector with his unit 17 Jat Regiment, on 19th June 1999.
He freed Point 5203 from the enemy’s grip. The team returned to their base. However, they needed to lay a communication network in a captured bunker. Captain Aditya returned to lay the communication network. While doing so, he confronted the enemy, and during the encounter, he was martyred.
His 17 Jat Regiment liberated the Muskoh Valley from the enemy, and the unit was honored with the title of Muskoh Saviour. After recovering from his injuries, he was martyred during an encounter with terrorists on 25th September 1999 in Kupwara. Major Ritesh Sharma liberated the Muskoh Valley from the enemy

After studying at Larmartiniar College, Major Ritesh Sharma enrolled in BHU. He was selected from the Combined Defence Services. On December 9, 1995, Major Ritesh Sharma became an officer in the army after passing out of the Passing Out Parade. In May 1999, after receiving training at the Army Training College in Mahu, he came home to Lucknow for a 15-day leave. During this time, he received information that the patrolling party of four Jat soldiers in the Kargil area was missing. He returned to his unit, the 17th Jat Regiment.
Major Ritesh hoisted the tricolor on Point 4875 with his detachment. On the night of 6th and 7th July, when they were capturing the Mashkoh Valley, Major Ritesh got injured. Following the CO’s orders, he handed over the command to Captain Anuj Nair before returning to the base.
His 17th Jat Regiment freed the Mashkoh Valley from the enemy’s control, and the unit was honored with the Mashkoh Savior title. After this, the injured Ritesh Sharma recovered. Then, on 25th September 1999, during an encounter with terrorists on the Line of Control in Kupwara, he got injured again. On 6th October 1999, he took his last breath at the Naradarn Command Hospital.”
